One of the problems faced with on a daily basis for motorists it is the horrible event of a collision with an animal such as a kangaroo. Although you cant help bad luck, if you do hit an animal there are a few steps to take to make sure that animal gets the treatment it needs and deserves. 1. Pull your vehicle well off the road for the safety of yourself and other motorists. 2. Asses were the animal has gone, don't put your own life in risk by running on to busy motorways. 3. If the animal is in a place were it is a traffic hazard ring 000. 4.Call your local wildlife rescue authority such as Wildlife Victoria, wildlife rescue services are easily found on Google if you are not sure. If they are not available or you cant find the number just call 000 for assistance. 5.If the animal is moving around try to immobilize it and minimize movement , cover its face/head with a towel or jumper ( this can really help a stressed animal calm down). 6. If the animal has a pouch, check the pouch for any young joeys that may of survived the accident, if there is a joey in the pouch keep it in there for as long as possible to absorb the warmth from the mum , if the mum has passed away and the joey seems cold, pull it out of the pouch, wrap it up in a jumper or towel and keep it warm, as a rule, un-furred joeys should be kept at a temperature above 32. 7. Wait for assistance, don't leave the animal by its self as they will often move from the position they were in making it hard for rescue to find the injured animal.
